3D Caps3D CAPS richt zich op het gebruik van 3D-printtechnieken voor sorptiematerialen voor CO2. Dit project wordt gecoördineerd door ECN.

Three Dimensional Printed Capture Materials for Productivity Step-Change, 3D-CAPS. Step-changes are required to accelerate the introduction of CCS technologies, one of the overall goals of the ERA-NET ACT program.

3D Caps Impact

The project 3D-CAPS targets a productivity increase of an order of magnitude in two sorbent-based technologies for CCS. This will lead to a substantial decrease in overall equipment size and costs.

This will be achieved using the latest available techniques for materials production: additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D-printing.

One bottle neck for traditional packed-bed solutions for sorbent-based CCS technologies is the trade-off between flow-rate through the reactor, pressure drop and kinetics of the adsorption process.

The use of 3D-printing will allow bespoke material configuration solutions for sorbent-based CCS technologies not available with current production technologies that allow the maximum interplay between these three competing and complementary elements.

  • Productivity (kg CO2 /m3hr) increase by a factor 10 of sorbent based capture technologies

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)

De subsidieregeling CCUS stimuleert innovaties die:

  • barrières wegnemen bij CCUS-projecten; technische, economische én maatschappelijke barrières
  • kosten verlagen, de energie-efficiency verhogen én de veiligheid vergroten van afvang, transport en opslag van CO2
  • hergebruik van CO2 bevorderen

Afvang, transport en opslag van CO2 is voor Nederland kansrijk:

  • door de structuur van de Nederlandse energie- en industriesectoren.
  • de (mogelijke) toekomstige beschikbaarheid van infrastructuur en opslagmogelijkheden voor CO2.
  • de Nederlandse kennispositie op dit terrein.

Potentiële oplossingen worden benaderd vanuit technologisch, economisch, maatschappelijk en/of juridisch perspectief.

Two application areas

  1. SEWGS
    Medium temperature (300-500°C) Reactive pressure swing adsorption technology using hydrotalcites; syngas processing with CO2 capture; decarbonised H2 production for refineries together with natural gas combined cycle
  2. ImmoAmmo
    Low temperature (40-130°C) Vacuum pressure / temperature swing adsorption Amine-functionalized silicas; replacement of solvent-based systems for CO2 removal. Natural gas combined cycle post-combustion configuration
