3PX is een energieconcept, in samenwerking tussen de TU/e en Alliander, dat de mogelijkheden waarbij de warmte van een hybride auto gebruikt wordt voor de warmtevraag van een huishouden.

Substantiating the environmental and economic aspects

Idea: use your hybrid car as a micro-CHP and use it as the central energy conversion point.

Omschrijving

A new concept is described to cover basic energy needs of a household, bridging the three major energy consumers:

  1. transportation
  2. heating
  3. electrical appliances

The heart of the new concept, baptized 3PX for Three Power Crossover, is a generator driven by an internal combustion engine, normally used as a range extender in a hybrid car.

To decrease running costs and to be able to operate continuously, the choice of fuel is natural gas from a household grid connection.

In conventional micro-CHP systems, costs tends to be prohibitive. Hybrid cars, however, are essentially mobile micro-CHP systems. They are perfectly equipped for the aim as they already have most of the required components (i.e. internal combustion engine, generator, power electronics, etc..), making it relatively low-cost to adapt these to the 3PX concept.

The hybrid vehicle is to be connected to the house with two connectors that enable energy transport between house and vehicle: one for electricity and the second for natural gas and coolant.

When the hybrid car is not connected to the house, the generator will function as a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled range extender. Using a single fuel for both applications has the benefit that the combustion process can be optimized for this fuel.

The proposed method delivers more electricity in winter than in summer, and in that sense it is complementary to solar energy.

Renewable energy feeds

Renewable electricity sources, particularly photovoltaic solar panels, can charge the hybrid car in summer. The combination of solar generated electricity in summer and 3PX generated electricity in winter, combined with the added flexibility in the electricity grid, will lead to increased opportunities for optimal use of intermittent renewable energy.

Simulations have been ran for a household with modern energy requirements. Results indicate an yearly electricity generation of more than 3000 kWh when all required heat is provided by 3PX.

Reduce of 1100 kg CO2 per household

For the simulated household this saved more than 1100 kg CO2 emissions on a yearly basis, which is a significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The 3PX concept will already be financially and environmentally beneficial for a single household, these benefits can increase if the concept is used by an entire neighborhood.
