Piloting with 6 PMU’s in a 50kV distribution grid for reliably integrating RES

  • looptijd: 2015 - 2016
  • locatie: Goes, Zeeland
  • functie: Energiebewustzijn verhogen, meer flex

Characteristics of the system at hand

Distribution network: 50kV meshed network

  • “Phasor Measurement technology”
  • 6 substations
  • 70 km, parallel with 150 kV network
  • Composition: partly single-, partly double-circuit; cables, water crossings, civil works
  • Generator infeed: CHPs + Wind farms: 80 MW
  • Industrial and domestic load: 110 MWExpected growth
    • Additional wind farm generation: 10 – 25 MW
    • Industrial solar farm: 2 – 10 MW
    • Domestic generation and load: Electric mobility, heat pumps, roof solar PV: 10 – 50 MW

Key questions

  • How can PMU improve performance of DNO, integrating RES?
  • Which measurements and applications can improve reliability, availability and efficiency of grid?
  • What is impact of new technologies on systems, processes, telecom infrastructure, ….
  • Total cost of Ownership of DNO

M.a.w.: wat hebben we er aan t.o.v. ouderwetse maar zeer robuuste netverzwaringen ….

  • Which new applications can be developed with new data?

Project: Proof of Concept

  • implementation of new technology in the grid
  • study of added value of PMUs via key applications
  • Open Data: involvement of non-contracted alliance partners

Research focus

In scope:

  • Power flow
  • Voltage variations, voltage stability
  • Power swings, oscillations
  • Dynamic Line Rating
  • State estimation
  • Power Quality / PQ propagation
  • Early warning -> online detection
  • mitigation -> up-front, real-time, off-line

Out of scope:

  • Island detection
  • WAMS/WAPS
  • Frequency stability

Locations: Goes (2x) – Zierikzee – Oosterland – Tholen – Kruiningen

Project partners: VSL, Delta Netwerkgroep

Partners:

PowerMatcher 2.0 - Flexible Power Alliance Network (FAN)

Status March 9, 2015

  • PMU’s installed, up and running
  • First results

De Phasor Measurements zijn zeer zeker commercieel exploitabel te maken en op te schalen.
In feite gaat het om proven technology (reeds meer dan 30 jaar oud) die nu ook voor lagere spanningsniveaus interessant aan het worden is.

Concluding remarks

Is distribution system “sufficiently” dynamic/transient?

  • High power: max 100 MW?
  • Large distances: max 50 km?
  • Wide area?
  • Dynamic distortions/initiations?
Big Data/identification and mitigation sufficiently fast?
  • Data transmission: bandwidth and time lag
  • Data processing: early warning/(near) real-time detection Mitigating interventions
  • What interventions are available?
  • Can the control system respond quick and sufficient? Interest from application developers?
  • Vendors, universities, non-traditional, ….)
  • Invitation to participate in Open Data
